The Scottish Lowland Longsword pattern was directly influenced by the German and Swiss armouries of the 16th century. The provenance placed on the original by the National Museum of Scotland is 1500AD.
The pattern adopted by Scottish Lowland Men at Arms bares a striking resemblance to the German and Swiss European swords of the 16th century.
The German bladesmiths of Solingen would remark frequently on the preference of the Scots when ordering sword blades for both Highland and Lowland sword cutlers, that the requisite for broad blades was singular to that nation.
